What Is a Homestead Exemption, and How Do I File for It?

Every Texas homeowner should know about the Homestead Exemption—it’s one of the few government programs that actually puts money back in your pocket.

If you own and occupy your home as your primary residence, the homestead exemption reduces the taxable value of your property, saving you hundreds (sometimes thousands) every year.

Here’s how it works in Lubbock County:

1. What It Does
The exemption doesn’t lower your home’s market value—it lowers the portion that’s taxed. For example, if your home is valued at $300,000 and you qualify for a $40,000 exemption, you’ll only pay property taxes on $260,000.

Depending on your tax rate (typically 1.9%–2.6%), that could save you $800–$1,200 per year.

2. Who Qualifies
To qualify, you must:

  • Own the property on January 1st of the tax year.

  • Use it as your primary residence (not a rental or second home).

  • Have your Texas driver’s license or ID showing the same address as the home.

Additional exemptions exist for seniors (65+), disabled homeowners, veterans, and surviving spouses.

3. How to File
It’s free and simple—no third-party services needed.
Here’s the process:

  1. Visit the Lubbock Central Appraisal District (LCAD) website.

  2. Download the Homestead Exemption Application.

  3. Submit it online or by mail along with a copy of your driver’s license.

That’s it. Once approved, your exemption automatically renews each year as long as you keep living in the home.

4. When to File
Applications open January 1st through April 30th each year. If you miss the deadline, you can still apply late and receive up to two years of back credit.

5. Why It Matters
With rising property values across Lubbock, every exemption helps soften the tax impact. And unlike refinancing or appealing your taxes, this one doesn’t require effort year after year—it’s set-and-forget savings.

When I work with new homeowners, I always remind them to file their exemption right after closing. It’s a simple step that pays off every single year you own your home.

In a market where every dollar counts, this is one piece of paperwork that’s absolutely worth your time.
